The Twelve by Justin Cronin: A Gripping and Masterful Sequel Done Right

Conventional book wisdom would have readers believe two things: 1) The book is always better than the movie, and 2) A sequel cannot be better than the book from which it stems. Obviously, there are some exceptions, but adages like these don’t develop from thin air–they’re based in something, whether it’s hundreds of anecdotes or thousands of online ratings. It often feels edgy to say that a sequel is better–and, most times, this simply isn’t the case. Once the novelty of a new world wears off, the difficulty of sustaining reader interest intensifies substantially, and many writers resort to gimmicks and cheap tricks to warrant revisiting a story’s characters again. Every so often, though, a sequel comes along that not only enhances enjoyment of the first book, but improves upon the flaws from the first story in nearly every conceivable way. The Twelve by Justin Cronin is one such tome– it masterfully continues the story where The Passage left off, hooking readers with its nonlinear narrative and indelible characters, and it does so in a much shorter timeframe. The Twelve is 200 pages thinner than its predecessor, forcing the story to move at a breakneck pace that whips readers along for the ride. Not a second is wasted, and every narrative move pays dividends by the story’s end. Everything that made the first book so memorable is still present and in the forefront–it’s just better on this second go around. Continue reading

Good news! (FREE STUFF!)

Hey, everybody! Sorry about the lack of posting on here recently, but I’ve been working very hard on some projects, and one of them is ready! The other day, I published my first short story on Amazon.

It’s called Just a Thing, and it’s the story of a boy trying to cope with his mother’s death. He makes some pretty questionable decisions, and he winds up in some pretty big trouble. The story itself is roughly 14 pages long and is available for all E-reading devices for 99 cents. I put a lot of work into this (and I mean a lot) and I’m pretty proud of it. Here’s the link.

BUT WAIT!

I’ve made the book free for five days. Starting tomorrow, you can download the book, absolutely free of charge. That way, if you hate it, you don’t have to feel like you wasted your hard-earned money. Of course, if you want to be super-cool, you could pay the dollar now and support me 😉  But no, really, just get it for free. The promo ends on the 5th of September, and I’m never making it free again, so get it while ya can.

I’ll love you forever if you’ll leave an honest review. Anyway, click the link and check out the cover and what not, and make sure you check back in tomorrow and pick it up! I would’ve waited to post this, but honestly I’m just so excited right now that I had to tell someone. This is step number one in my career, and I hope at least some of you will start the climb with me.

Don’t forget. 9/1/15-9/5/15. Free stuff. Can’t beat it.

Have a good day; mine’s already been terrific.

Story Sunday…Tuesday Pt 5

I figured I’d post this now because I honestly have not clue when I’d get around to doing it otherwise. I forgot to post on Sunday because I was at a friend’s place and didn’t think about it. For that, I apologize, but you’ll get over it.

I just finished my last day of high school… Still feels funny to say that. For this website, that means two things: more activity (If I can beat the laziness bug) and more sporadic posting. This summer is going to be very eventful for me, so I might have to do away with the scheduled updates and go with the whenever-I-get-to-it kinda thing. We’ll see. Anyway, here is part 5.

Story Sunday: Pt 4

640px-Quill_and_Ink

I almost forgot to post this tonight. I had a pretty awesome weekend, and sometimes I get a little forgetful when my mind goes other places. Anyway, I have a few things to say first. This is big for me, but you guys may not care. In the past week, I have gotten over 500 views on my website. This was due to an article that I wrote about our school’s senior cookout/not really a prank thing getting us all suspended. It was complete horse crap, but I felt like writing it because I like to stir stuff up… and I thought I made it clear that it was a joke. I was later informed that parents had actually asked the school if it were true. Whoops. Anyway, 500 views in a week is more than I’ve ever had; it was more than I’d had in like 4 months. So that’s pretty cool.

Honestly, I don’t have much else as of now. I’ll make a big update post with some thoughts on it later, but it is getting late and I’d like to get this posted tonight so my alliteration thing will still work. Here ya go, readers. Here’s Parts 1, 2, and 3 if ya missed em.  Continue reading

Story Sunday: (Pt 3)

640px-Quill_and_Ink

It’s that time of week again. It’s time for me to fill your social media feeds with links to this website, and you either click and read or get really irritated and keep scrolling. For me, it’s a time of nervousness.

I’m not sure how well this is received. When I had it on my old blog, I had people constantly coming up to me and asking what was going to happen… they actually cared. Now, my view count is down and numbers are diminished. I’m getting slightly discouraged, but that’s what I get for not heeding the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” adage.  Continue reading

Story Sunday! (Pt. 2 from last week)

640px-Quill_and_Ink

I picked a pretty random day to post the first part of my blog-story… let’s just say it didn’t translate into as many views as I was expecting. I wish I could tell you that views didn’t matter to me, but they do, otherwise I wouldn’t post content on the internet at all; I’m trying to gather a readership here! I do realize that by this time you have probably already made up your mind on whether or not you’re going to continually click these links, and that’s cool. I can’t force you to read anything… it would just improve your life a little if I could. I digress.  Continue reading

Story Time! (Redux)

640px-Quill_and_Ink

As I stated in my last post, I’m going to bring back the thing that got me my following on my other (and since deceased) blog. It was a story that I began writing as a junior in high school. It went over extremely well with those who read it, and I am aware of the need to put something creative on here, so I’m gonna test the waters for a bit.

Here’s the deal: I’m going to do exactly as I used to. I’ll post in 4 page increments, one time a week. I’ve got most of the story written and grouped already, so the suspense should hopefully keep ya coming back for more. Please keep in mind that this was done when I was a much more inexperienced writer, so there are probably some kinks and things I could’ve done better. But, as I said before, everyone who read it the first go ’round had nothing but good things to say, so hopefully that’ll hold true this time. I’m not even sure like this thing anymore. Let me know what you guys think!

IF this gets the same positive response, I’ll continue to post the story until it is completed (which will require some new writing on my part). If not enough people are diggin’ it, I’ll take it down and start fresh with a new one. Continue reading
